In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, a long-running feud between the Montagues and Capulets rocks the streets of Verona, bringing Romeo and Juliet to a tragic end. Revenge, love, and secret marriages cause young, unhappy lovers to grow up quickly, but fate drives them to suicide in despair. Contrasts and conflicts run like threads in Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, his one of the bard's favorite romantic tragedies.

Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona, Italy, where feuds between the Montague and Capulet families continue. The play opens with servants from both families engaging in a street brawl that eventually implicates the clan patriarchs and city officials, including Prince Escalas. The prince ended the conflict by issuing a decree prohibiting further fighting, threatening severe penalties. Meanwhile, Romeo, a young Montague man, laments his unrequited love for a woman named Rosaline, who has vowed to remain chaste for the rest of his life. Romeo and his friend Benvolio encounter Capulet's servant Peter, who is reading out the list of invitees to the Capulet's masquerade party that night. Romeo helps Peter read the list and decides to attend the party as Rosaline will also be attending. He's going to wear a mask so no one will know he's a Montague. Romeo dresses up and comes to the Capulet's party. As soon as he sees the young Juliet Capulet, he falls in love. However, Juliet's cousin Tybalt notices Romeo and she tries to kill him on the spot. Lord Capulet intervenes, insisting that Tybalt not disturb the party as he will offend the Prince. Undaunted, Romeo quietly approaches Juliet and confesses his love for her. After exchanging loving words, the two kiss. Later, Juliet's nurse tells Romeo that Juliet is of the Capulet family, infuriating the boy she loves. Meanwhile, Juliet is shocked to learn that Romeo belongs to the Montague family. Later that night, Romeo climbs over Juliet's garden wall. Julia comes out onto the balcony and speaks out her own personal thoughts. She wanted Romeo to drop his name and marry her. After hearing her confession, Romeo appears and tells Juliet that he loves her. She encourages him to be true in her love, and he vows to do the same. Before parting, they agree that Juliet will send her nurse to Romeo's at nine o'clock the next day, after which they will arrange the place for her wedding. The nurse did her duty and told Juliet to meet Romeo at the chapel where the Lawrence brothers lived and worked. There Juliet meets Romeo and the monk secretly marries her. Benvolio and Mercutio (another friend of Romeo's) wait in the street for Tybalt's arrival later that day. Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel and wants to know Romeo's whereabouts to punish him for sneaking into the group. Mercutio is eloquent but ambiguous, while Romeo is inadvertently dragged into the middle of an argument. Tybalt challenges him, but Romeo reluctantly fights back, prompting Mercutio to intervene and point his sword at Tybalt. Romeo tries to fight them off, but Tybalt cuts off Mercutio and flees, only to find out that Mercutio is dead. Furious at his friend's death, Romeo fights and kills Tybalt. He then decides to run away. Prince Escalus arrives at the crime scene and banishes Romeo from Verona forever. A nurse tells Juliet the sad news of what happened to Tybalt and Romeo. Juliet is heartbroken and realizes that Tybalt would have been killed had Romeo not fought him. She dispatches her nurse to find Romeo and give him the ring. That night, Romeo sneaks into Juliet's room and they are married. The next morning Julia's mother arrives so he has to go. Romeo travels to Mantua and waits for news of Juliet and her exile. However, during Romeo and Juliet's only night together, Lord Capulet decides that she should marry a young man named Paris, whom Juliet proposes to. Lord Capulet and Lady Capulet tell Julia of her plans, but Julia refuses, infuriating her father. She claims that when neither Lady Capulet nor her nurse refuses to stand up for her girl, she leaves her side. Juliet then visits her brother Lawrence, and together she makes plans to reunite with Romeo. A priest gives Julia a potion that makes her look dead for at least two days. During this time, Romeo will meet her at the Capulet family tomb. The Friar promises to inform Romeo of his plans. That night, Juliet takes a monk's potion. The next morning, the day of Julia and Paris' wedding, her nurse finds her "dead" in her bed. As her whole family mourns her suicide, the Lawrence brothers rush to insist that she be taken to the family safe. Unfortunately, Brother John was unable to deliver the letter to Romeo informing him of his plans. Romeo is heartbroken when Romeo's servant brings the news that Juliet has died in Mantua. He hurries back to Verona, but first buys poison from a pharmacy and writes a farewell letter explaining the tragic course of events. The Lawrence brothers, realizing that their letter did not reach Romeo, rush to the Capulet tomb, hoping to get there before Romeo. When Romeo arrives at the Capulet's vault, he finds it guarded by Paris, who is mourning the death of his fiancée. Paris challenges Romeo to a duel, but Romeo immediately kills Paris. Romeo carries Paris' body to her tomb. Seeing Juliet's "dead" body in the tomb, Romeo drinks poison and kisses her one last time before dying. The Lawrence brothers arrive at the grave just as Juliet wakes up. he is trying
